How flood insurance premiums are calculated
Flood insurance premiums are driven primarily by your building value and FEMA flood zone designation. High-risk zones pay the most — roughly $7.50 per $1,000 of building value — while low-risk zones pay around $1.20 per $1,000. A higher deductible lowers your premium modestly, but you will pay more out of pocket when you file a claim. Most flood policies are sold through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
